Structured finance and the establishment of funds is at the core of our Real Estate Division, as the development of innovative fund structures, allowing investors tax-efficient, flexible, indirect real estate investment opportunities, has transformed the property investment arena in the last few years.

We have been at the forefront of innovation in this field for a number of years, having invented many of the structures that are commonly employed in the market today, including clearing the original tax treatment of limited partnerships with the Inland Revenue and developing mechanisms to enable investors to have differential levels of geared exposure to the same underlying assets.

We act for the market leaders and, to date, our Property Investment Funds team has advised in relation to funds with an aggregate value of well over £6 billion. Innovative structures that we have developed have since been widely adopted in the market place.

The team is led by David Ryland, who has been ranked in a series of publications as one of the leading lawyers in this field, being variously described as "property finance guru", "the best legal mind in the country" and "in a class of his own". He was also ranked by The Times in February 2003 as one of the seven most prominent property lawyers in the country.
