Practice Areas | Advocacy
The Advocacy Group is headed by Richard Slowe, the first Solicitor Advocate to exercise rights of audience in the High Court.
One of the most important changes brought about by the Civil Procedure Rules (CPR) has been the requirement for solicitors and clients to play a greater role in pre-trial hearings, and particularly at case management conferences. Such hearings have assumed a greater degree of importance and tend to have far-reaching consequences in terms of the success or failure of proceedings. The members of our Advocacy Group regularly appear at pre-trial hearings as well as trials. Their ability to attend Court at short notice, and the familiarity our advocates have with a case from its inception add considerable support to the successful prosecution of any litigation.
Across our practice groups, we are well placed to represent our clients at Court hearings, and the use of our Advocacy Group can provide savings in time and costs, as well as ensuring continuity of representation for the client. In addition to the partners and assistants who are former barristers and run our Advocacy Group, all of our litigation lawyers undergo advanced advocacy training.
One of the most important advantages for our clients of using one of our own advocates is that of being represented by the lawyer most closely connected with the detail of the case. This means avoiding the duplication of costs that often arises if barristers are instructed unnecessarily. However, although SJ Berwin is a leader amongst firms of solicitors providing advocacy services, we still recognise the need in relevant cases to work with specialist barristers who are leaders in their field.
