James Gill is a partner in the firm’s Commerce & Technology Group. He specialises in commercial contracts, technology projects, BPO and ITO outsourcings, e-commerce, procurement, intellectual property exploitation & data protection.

James joined SJ Berwin in 2005, having previously worked at Freshfields where he acted as lead lawyer on many technology, outsourcing, e-commerce and IP projects.

James experience includes acting for:

  • ABN Amro on the outsourcing by Barclays Bank of various back office functions
  • Association of Payment and Clearing Services (APACS) and 13 retail banks on a multi-million pound Managed IT Services Contract in relation to faster payments, the new UK electronic payment system that will allow UK consumers to use the internet or telephone to make payments that will reach a recipient's bank account within a few hours
  • General Motors in relation to its power train joint venture with Fiat
  • Henderson Investors on the outsourcing of various back office functions
  • Hewlett Packard in relation to the multi-million dollar outsourcing by Ericsson of its desktop and support requirements in over 130 countries
  • Hilton Hotels on various procurement and technology projects
  • Investors Bank & Trust on the outsourcing by Norges Bank of its back office financial processing services
  • a leading online marketing services company in relation to various e-commerce and data protection issues
  • a leading credit derivatives broker-dealer on the implementation of an electronic trading platform to its UK clients
  • RBS in relation to various technology and banking services projects

James also advises on the commercial, IP and IT issues involved in business mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures and IPOs. James speaks regularly on outsourcing, IT and intellectual property issues, including at Hawksmere conferences. James qualified in 1997 and has spent time on secondment with major financial institutions.
