Simon Ricketts is a partner in and head of SJ Berwin’s Planning and Environment
Group. He has a wide planning, compulsory purchase and local government law
practice, with particular experience in planning inquiries, the negotiation of
planning and infrastructure agreements and supporting large property and
corporate transactions. His clients include institutional investors and funds, public
authorities, developers and utilities. Simon is a former barrister. He was called to
the Bar in 1985 and requalified as a solicitor in 1991. He joined SJ Berwin from
Lovells in 1997 and was made a partner in 1999.

Simon has acted on all planning aspects of some of the largest projects and
transactions in the UK since joining SJ Berwin in 1999. He also led SJ Berwin’s
input into the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s review of permitted
development rights in 2003.

Jointly with partner Duncan Field, Simon contributed a paper, “Large scale mixed
use development and the UK planning system: Does it fit and will the Planning White
Paper assist?”, to the Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal. Jointly with
Nicholas Shattock (Quintain) Simon contributed a paper, “Mediation and The
Planning Inspectorate”, to the Smith Institute’s book “Planning for the Future”, 2008.

Simon is a member of the British Council for Shopping Centres, British Council for
Offices and the Compulsory Purchase Association. He is a member of Westminster
Property Owners’ Association’s Transport Working Party and is on the editorial
board of PLC Property.

Simon regularly chairs Hawksmere’s twice yearly seminar: “Mixed Use
Development: the Legal and Practical Issues”.
