Phillip Howell-Richardson is a leading Dispute Resolution Consultant, a full time mediator specialising in commercial disputes and leads SJ Berwin’s ADR Unit. He has over 18 years experience often in the most complex cases. He is highly experienced, widely recognised as a top mediator in the U.K. and internationally and has extensive involvement with the development of mediation.
He has mediated successfully the whole range of commercial disputes including contract and commerce, financial, fraud, shareholder disagreements, insurance, intellectual property, professional negligence, construction and engineering, property, personal injury, employment and environment claims. He has continued to extend his leading reputation in class actions, multi-party claims and international disputes.
Examples of cases mediated include disputes involving European Banks and warranty claims, a dispute between public bodies involving regulatory issues, an insurance claim for £130 million following a fire at a public institution, claims totaling 1.2 billion rand against a tax payer, the Porton Down claims, breach of director’s duties and shareholder actions, and a claim concerning offshore insurance arrangements and breach of fiduciary duties involving 20 parties.
Phillip has been elected as a Founding Fellow in Mediation at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators where he is also a member of the ADR Committee of that Institute. He is also a member of a planning group for the creation of a College or Academy for all UK Civil Mediators, the launch of which is likely to occur in the latter part of 2008. Phillip continues as the Honorary Chairman of ADR Net and in the development of that nationwide group of mediators. Phillip is a mediator member of the London Court of International Mediation, the City Dispute Panel, the Civil Mediation Council, IPOS, CEDR, Resolex, Clerksroom and of Sports Resolutions. He is a member of the Court of Appeal Mediation Panel and continues to contribute to the development of Court mediation initiatives.
Phillip is involved in the significant developments in the U.K. and in the development of international mediation. He continues to be a member of the CPR Executive Advisory Committee which meets in New York and is a member of the European Committee of CPR which meets in Paris, London and Geneva. Phillip addressed the last European Congress of CPR in Paris leading presentations given by judges from France and America. He is a member of the IBA and took part in the ADR programme of the ABA at their AGM. Phillip is a panel mediator of the ICC in Paris and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva and will be contributing to their programmes in the future. Phillip is a Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators and attends their meetings in the United States. Presently Phillip is planning the first international meeting of the IAM outside America which is to take place in September 2009 and which is to be held at SJ Berwin’s offices in London.
