Matt Evans is an associate in the firm’s EU and Competition department, specialising in EU and UK competition law.

Matt trained with SJ Berwin and qualified in 2000. Matt has also worked for the European Commission in Brussels in the Directorate General for Internal Market.

Matt has considerable experience in commencing and defending contentious and noncontentious actions relating to UK and European competition law before the Office
of Fair Trading, the Competition Commission, the European Commission and the UK Courts. He regularly advises on complex merger notifications to the Office of Fair Trading and the European Commission. Matt has a particular interest in free movement issues relating to betting and gaming markets and works with colleagues across Europe in protecting clients' rights to take advantage of the single market. Matt also advises clients in the sports and music sectors in particular on a wide range of competition issues including collective licensing and distribution matters. Matt also advises on State aid issues in a number of industries covering state aid clearance notifications to the European Commission, complaints against unlawful state aid and how best to take advantage of state aid block exemptions. In particular, Matt has considerable experience in applying the environmental guidelines on State aid.

Matt has a Masters in Classics and Modern languages (French) from the University of Oxford and post graduate qualifications in law from the College of Law, Chester
and specifically in EC Competition Law from Kings College, London. He also speaks regularly at internal and external conferences and has written several articles in a number of publications.
