Julia is a partner and Head of the Construction Group. She joined SJ Berwin LLP in 2007, having previously been at Lovells and then at Hammonds, where she was a partner.
Julia has specialised in all aspects of construction and in major projects for over 16 years, acting for private and public sector clients, for funders and for contractors on a wide range of projects, both international and domestic. As well as concentrating on development and regeneration her extensive experience extends to asset and facilities maintenance, energy and renewable energy, particularly wind farms, the rail and defence sectors, PFI/PPP and construction and engineering infrastructure.
She drafts and negotiates construction contracts, concession/project level documentation, subcontracts, appointments, warranties, guarantees and bonds and regularly works with clients to identify and assess project risk. She also advises on acquisitions and disposals and on the construction elements of development agreements, agreements for lease and sale and purchase documentation.
She has worked with all the major groups of construction standard form, including the JCT, NEC/ECC, ICE and FIDIC. She has also drafted and negotiated bespoke forms.
She advises on procurement across the range of options including traditional, design and build, construction management, management contracting, and partnering and has extensive experience of target and other price incentive approaches to contracting, in order to deliver efficient projects and successful outcomes.
She is recommended by Chambers as "commercially minded" and "known for her sound, sensible and practical" advice.
Julia is also experienced in all forms of dispute resolution within the construction sector and in working with clients to minimise and manage disputes.
Julia is a Committee Member and Secretary of the TeCSA (Technology and Construction Solicitors Association) and a member of the Society of Construction Law.
