Having studied for a year at the University of Saarbrucken, Germany, Tom Usher completed his undergraduate studies at Kings College, London. He completed a further post graduate diploma in European Community Law whilst at SJ Berwin, where he became a partner in the EU & Competition department in 1999.
Tom advises clients in a number of industries on all aspects of EC law and UK competition law, from competition compliance to merger analysis and from the treatment of vertical agreements and abusive practices to horizontal agreements and cartels. He has a particular interest in advising clients in intellectual property based industries including the music, film and pharmaceutical industries, where legal issues arise from the inherent tension between competition law and the monopoly rights conferred by intellectual property.
He also advises a number of interests in the sports, broadcasting and entertainment industries and has developed expertise in collective selling issues, exclusive broadcasting contracts, E-commerce and parallel trade. He has brought and defended a number of competition related actions based on European Community law issues, before the Commission and the Courts in Europe and also the domestic courts in the UK.
