Daniel is a partner in the Financial Services Group. His practice divides into two broad strands. First, he is routinely involved in supporting the various funds, corporate and other practice groups around the Firm and their clients in relation to regulation of financial services issues. In this capacity, in 2005 he was involved with more than 40 investment fund launches and closings in 2005-6, as well as arranging for numerous clients of SJ Berwin to become FSA-regulated or to make substantial amendments to their regulatory profiles. Following the January 2005 UK implementation of the EC Insurance Mediation Directive, he has advised a number of clients in the property and retail sectors on putting structures in place which avoid the need for direct FSA regulation for the provision or negotiation of insurance arrangements.

The other side of Daniel's practice involves an expanding client base of institutional and regulatory clients within the financial services sector seeking advice on compliance, capital structure, investment marketing, conflict resolution/Chinese walls and foreign establishment issues. Daniel acted for three clients launching investment structures under the Enterprise Investment Scheme in 2005 (and foresees the EIS as continuing to be an area of considerable interest for the higher end of the retail investments and savings market for some time to come). Daniel also advises on the use of regulated UK and EU collective investment schemes for special types of investment project. His book Managed Funds (Butterworths Compliance Series, 2001) will be going to a much-awaited second edition before the end of 2007, and he has also been commissioned to edit the 4th edition (for April 2007 publication by Tottel) of E-Commerce: A Guide to the Law of Electronic Business, which he edited in 2000 at the second edition stage.
