Michael Goldberg is a partner in the Corporate Finance department of SJ Berwin LLP. Michael qualified in 1990 and joined SJ Berwin LLP in 1994. He was made a partner in 1997. Michael advises on a broad range of M&A transactions including IPOs, joint ventures and acquisitions and disposals. He is particularly active in the real estate sector. Michael’s clients include British Land, Westfield, Delancey, Colliers CRE, Wichford, Brixton, Prestbury, Buckingham Securities, First Calgary Petroleums and Ticketmaster.
Michael recently advised Royal Bank of Scotland on the sale of 25 Canada Square, Canada Wharf for £1 billion. This was reported as the second largest ever single property acquisition in the UK and, along with the purchase of the Meadowhall Shopping Centre by British Land for over £1 billion, means that Michael has advised on two of the three largest ever single property acquisitions in the UK.
Other transactions Michael has led recently include advising Westfield on its £1.05 billion joint venture with Queensland Investment Corporation in respect of the Merry Hill Shopping Centre and the formation by Westfield of its £540 million UK shopping centre fund and advising Delancey on the establishment of DV4, its new £1 billion evergreen property fund. He has advised British Land on many transactions, including over £3 billion in value of joint ventures.
He also led the SJ Berwin Corporate Finance teams in two different transactions for which the firm received Real Estate Team of the Year Awards, respectively from The Lawyer in 2004 when acting for Royal Bank of Scotland in relation to the £1.1 billion acquisition of two Canary Wharf buildings and from Legal Business in 2005 when acting for Prestbury Group in relation to its £400 million acquisition of Travelodge sites.
Michael is recommended in the Chambers & Partners 2008 legal directory as follows: "The "simply outstanding" Michael Goldberg is "thorough, methodical and very good face-to-face - in short, a class act". Refreshingly understated in his approach he "quickly gains the trust and respect of his clients"."
