SJ Berwin hires four new partners – in Energy & Infrastructure in London, Competition in Brussels and a Corporate team in Milan

03/01/2012

International law firm SJ Berwin has announced a New Year wave of hires with the arrival this week of an experienced Energy & Infrastructure partner in London; two partners with M&A and private equity expertise plus six associates in Milan; and a partner in Brussels to further enhance the firm’s market-leading EU, Competition & Regulatory team.

SJ Berwin's Managing Partner Rob Day said: "This is a fantastic start to the New Year and will present some exciting opportunities for the firm in 2012.  Attracting high calibre people is testimony to the quality of our firm and supports our strategic goal of strengthening our core practice groups across our international business.  We are really pleased the partners that are joining us have decided that SJ Berwin is the best platform from them and their clients.

"The Energy & Infrastructure sector is an important driver of global growth and an area the firm has wanted to strengthen for some time.  We are delighted Neil Upton, who has an excellent market reputation and an international client base that complements our own, has joined us to focus on this sector.

"Corporate and private equity is a market leading practice for our business and we see the Italian market as an important part of our global footprint.  The hires of both partners and their teams in Italy reaffirms our commitment to our international clients that require this specific industry knowledge.

“Competition is an area in which SJ Berwin has long been known to excel and the further strengthening of our international team in Brussels is a natural step which supports our clients’ needs for top quality advice on antitrust, merger clearance and European regulation.”

The announcement of four new partners in January 2012 follows last year’s appointment of seven lateral hires in Dubai, Frankfurt, London and Paris.

New E&I Partner in London

Neil Upton, who has been rated as one of the Top Four energy lawyers in the UK by PLC and is highly regarded by Chambers and Legal 500, is joining SJ Berwin to lead the development of the firm's Energy & Infrastructure team with Elaine Gibson-Bolton.

Neil has previously been Global Head of Power at White and Case and Global Head of Energy at DLA Piper.  He will be working alongside recent lateral recruits, partners Rinku Bhadoria and Michelle Thomsen.
Neil has a global practice advising utilities, governments, banks and financial institutions on all aspects of the energy and water business.

Neil Upton said: "I am really looking forward to joining SJ Berwin. It’s a great fit because of the quality of their existing people, the backing of expert corporate, construction, competition, funds and finance lawyers, the strong international platform, and SJ Berwin’s clear commitment to the E&I sector."
