James Harper joined SJ Berwin as a trainee solicitor in 2003 and qualified in 2005. James specialises in commercial, contractual and consumer law, with a primary focus on IT matters, for clients in a variety of industry sectors. James’ experience includes drafting and negotiating outsourcing and procurement agreements, software supply and licensing agreements and technology development agreements. He also advises on data protection and e-commerce issues.

James acted for the BBC on its £600m outsourcing of the Digital Switchover Help Scheme to eaga plc. He has also acted for a major international retail chain, negotiating an agreement for the sourcing of the design, build and implementation of a new EPOS system across over 200 stores in the UK and continental Europe and on a number of business process outsourcing deals in the airline industry.

James contributes to the firm’s monthly IT briefing for In-House Lawyer magazine. He has also recently co-authored two feature articles for The In- House Lawyer entitled “Excluding and Limiting Liability in IT Contracts” and “Data Protection: Compliance is Key”.
