David Shapiro Wins Award for Contribution to Mediation

Wednesday 30th November 2005

SJ Berwin is proud to announce that David Shapiro has been honoured with a life time award for his contribution to the development of mediation on an international, national and local level at a recent ceremony hosted by the Association of Midlands Mediators.

David Shapiro has been at the forefront of developing mediation in the UK. Following his retirement from Dickstein, Shapiro & Morin in the USA, he moved to London and joined SJ Berwin as a consultant at the age of 67. Two years later he gained higher rights of audience and became a solicitor advocate and, more importantly, pushed the development of mediation by persuading judges that it was a good idea. David has now trained approximately 850 judges in mediation and has successfully mediated more than 1000 major disputes in this country, the USA and Europe.

Andrew Paton says: “The Association of Midlands Mediators is delighted to honour David’s contribution to mediation in Europe. He has been pivotal in moving alternative dispute resolution forward in this jurisdiction and we have enjoyed working with David for many years.”

David Harrel says: “David Shapiro heads SJ Berwin’s ADR Unit and has helped to put mediation on the map. He trains all our solicitors in mediation where it is a growing practice area.”
